The Scrimshaw Skeleton Silk Ribbon Small

A tribute to the plight of whales in the 19th century, this illustration draws on the folk art traditions of the whalers who hunted them. The carved whale teeth running along the length of the design were inspired by Susan's Teeth, a celebrated set of scrimshaw pieces inscribed by a Nantucket whaler in the 1800s. A carved bone seal anchors the composition, while skeleton coral woven throughout serves as a symbol of reverence for life and encouragement toward virtuous living.
