On the plaza at La Défense, the Red Elephant sculpture catches itself in the glass facades of the surrounding towers and fractures into something unexpected. Not a reflection exactly, more like a modern stained glass window, the kind of accidental Chagall that only a city built entirely of glass could produce.

Jean-Michel Gires stopped there long enough to see it, and to understand that the real image wasn't the sculpture itself but what the buildings were doing with it. That eye for the hidden picture, the photograph inside the photograph, is what made his work so distinctive. This scarf is one of the last expressions of that gift.
