The Floating Rabbits Silk Twill Shawl Rectangle
Pre-order by Sunday, May 24th.
A mosaic-inspired design featuring an elegant Roman greyhound traversing a mosaic floor, a birdcage balanced on his back. Birds, olives, pomegranates, and a metallic laurel wreath surround him in quiet splendour.
Crafted in a beautifully soft wool and silk blend, the matte, opaque texture lends the print an antique finish, completed with a delicate hand fringe.
Rooted in the arts and culture of Edo-period Japan, a pair of black-tailed jackrabbits occupy the foreground, each wearing a miniature kawari kabuto — a strange helmet — featuring stylized metal and lacquer rabbit ears, based on true artifacts of the era. Between them rests a matching helmet in the form of a crouching rabbit. Above, a third jackrabbit floats dreamily, tethered to a paper lantern daubed with the word "rabbit," sporting a woven tasselled cloth bearing a famous samurai crest.
Traditional paper lanterns hang from the top border, while behind the protagonists, a grassy hillside teems with white rabbits and silver reeds beneath a round, glowing moon. Lacquered and ivory animal-shaped menuki — tiny carved sword grips — line the upper and lower borders, framed by woven sword grip patterns and striped flagpoles tied at the corners with looped samurai rope.
Japanese hand-script echoing 17th-century zoological manuscripts is woven throughout, and a haiku runs down the left hand side:
Silently, at dusk, A hare is flying over A hundred rabbits
