Koinobori Karasu Silk Twill Shawl Rectangle
Pre-order by Sunday, May 24th.
Rooted in the arts and culture of Edo-period Japan, a folkloric Karasu — jungle crow — dives into tempestuous Hokusai-inspired waves, clutching a golden-lacquered samurai sword, strings of koinobori, skeletons, and a lobster trailing chaotically in its wake. Behind the heaving tide, the tip of Mount Fuji just barely emerges.
Above, a ragged illustrated manuscript details ornate arrowhead designs, while the centre of the top border reveals an aerial view of Dejima Island — the port through which many animals entered Japan during its period of self-imposed isolation. Beautifully plaited samurai rope borders frame the composition, and Japanese hand-script echoing 17th century zoological manuscripts is woven throughout.
A haiku is scrawled within the illustration:
The Karasu dives And koinobori flutter Over the ocean
