"The cold stillness of the air prickles my skin like a cactus, and I have a sensation of being watched. Now, a pair of glowing eyes shine and glint in the shadows, and the gray wolf looms suspiciously, assessing my every breath. He who never tests his shackles is unaware that he is chained. Which wolf will prosper? The wolf you feed." — A.S.

Inspired by the incredible dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History, this design recognizes the near-extinction of the gray wolf in the United States, driven by human prejudice and fear. The titular phrase draws on an ancient Cherokee legend: every man has two wolves fighting within him, one angry and resentful, the other kind and loving. Which wolf will win? The wolf you feed.

The date 1872, marking the creation of Yellowstone National Park and its pivotal role in the reintroduction of wolves, is set in stone within the composition. Fraktur folk art, fraternal society symbols, and 19th-century parcheesi board patterns weave throughout, each reimagined as an act of reverence for the natural world.
