"The weary mariners cry and point as the ancient ship creaks and lurches on the swelling tide. With throats unslaked and with black lips baked, their voices are quiet as the impressive wingspan of the bald eagle passes overhead with a skeletal catch in his fearsome talons. 'Quod superius sicut quod inferius' — As above, so below." — A.S.

Drawing on Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the folk art of 19th-century sailors, this design weaves themes of reverence, mortality, and our duty to the natural world. Skeletal details run throughout dried ferns, curling coral, carved whale teeth, and bone, each a poignant reminder to protect the world around us. The date 1865, marking the end of the Civil War, is quietly embedded within the composition.

An indirect sequel to The Alligator's Empire, the design carries connecting threads between the two, including an allusion to the Eye of Providence.
